is is better to get the trailer tow package when u buy the truck or a bad idea, if later on you just go buy a hitch. is it better to get the trailer tow package, will towing run better with it or without or just the same if you go either way. this applies to any year of a ford f-150, well actually question is towards a 2003 or 2004
IMO you can't go wrong by getting the Tow Package!!! It will come wired, with heavy duty shocks, alternator, bigger radiator and transmission cooler. By the time you buy all this after market stuff you will have paid for the option twice over at least.
Get the package! It comes all wired, including the standard flat 4 connector and the round 7 connector. It also includes an HD flasher and transmission cooler, which will help the truck out even running empty. If you ever think you'll tow, the package is definitely worth the money, plus it's a good resale thing. Just my opinion.
i bought a 2003 ford supercrew 4.6L V8 4X2, brand new back in nov of 2003, i didnt get the trailer tow package because basically they sold it so dirt cheap and it was clearance, so it had alot of other features but not the package on towing, so would i be ok just going to like u-haul or something and buying a hitch?
It also depends on what you are towing. Say a 500lb utility trailer... I would just throw it on the bumper and forget the towing package. The trans is not going to overheat for a small load. Once you get over 2000lbs you will wish you had the package.
I almost bought one without the tow package but looking at the factory Ford hitch it looked a lot beefier than an aftermarket job like the hidden hitch.
well dag-nabit, oh well, if i would of added package i wouldnt of got the good deal i had, ya know it weas like what u see is what u get, they said they didnt have Fx4's lariat left or at least fx4's i would had really opted for that heh..
Man, you gotta listen to ATCS2004 and 519DVX! Even if you never tow a thing, you'll enjoy the benefits of the tow package extras for the life of the truck. The trans cooler alone is pure peace of mind, but the added heavy duty alternator, battery and larger radiator are worth it!
This is one option I did not hesitate to specify when I ordered my truck. The cost/benefit is incredible...you should definitely get it if you can!
yeah i appreciate the advice i know i should of opted, but do u think just buying a hitch for it from like u-haul or something, i really dont want the hidden hitch, but just buying a hitch would towing be ok, im sure i wont be surpassing 2000 lbs, alot of ppl might think i will but ya know, thats alot of weight heh and u kind of think about it, im sure i wont like be hauling a car or anything just other stuff.
Oh yeah, an aftermarket hitch would work fine! I thought you still had a choice to get the package and wanted to say how great a deal it is!
And like Boneman said, if its a light load, you could just bumper it.
In either case, you'd need to figure out how to get electric to the trailer for lighting.
If you go to Fordvehicle.com website, there is a link to towing charts. That should give you an idea of any limits to bumper mount and maybe even aftermarket hitches.
That tow package was one of the best options based on quality and price. Imagine what it would cost to have a shop install a oversized battery, tranny cooler big radiator and alternater.Three words CHING-CHING-CHING. I recall it only costing about three hundred bucks. I bought a top of the line brake control for about $100. I dont think you could beat that value.
You shouldn't have a problem towing up to 4000lbs with out the tow package. The most important part of it is the trans oil cooler and there's only about 10 different outfits making them. Have the dealer install one. All they do is tie into the trans cooler lines that run the trans cooler in the radiator. The trans cooler they install will sit right out in front of the AC condenser inside the grill.
I'd call the dealer and see what he wants for a factory hitch and the trans cooler installed. That hitch is only a 175.00 option on the F250's. Thats probably about U-Haul will want.. U-Haul can also install a trans cooler, but for warranty problems later I'd let the dealer do that..
