I used the SS toggle type latches. Note that it is necessary to put some type of keeper through the eye to guaranty that these stay locked. Also, I have noticed that most trucks do not have the proper rubber bumpers in place to keep the bed tight to the gate. They are availble at Vintage Ford for about $3. They mount in the upper right and left corners of the tailgate. The two little metal punched fingers on the outside edges of the tailgate hold them in place. Rounded side should face toward the bedside and act as a guide as the tailgate is shut to hold it securely in place. This reduces the chance of things flexing and chipping your paint. Good luck, John
Posting here is a little like running for president. I've got a special thread all searched up and tagged from back in '68 on your less than Supernats quality Effie bed fashion trend suggestions. Don't make me bring it back up.
BTW, I actually used small polished aluminum L brackets. They attach to the bed with a couple S/S buttonhead bolts. I can open the bed up but it does take a minute. I'll invent some spring buttons so it will open when I get time.
Ohyeah 'Fenders, I was poking at you a bit and you came to the bait. I stand guilty on those metal bed charges It saved many tears from worrying about roo-nin a nice wood bed job since I have hauled tractors, gas cans, wood chips, chevy droppings.
At the first cruise nite after I got my '51, and old-timer saw the bare chains hanging from my tailgate and told me that all they did to prevent chipping was to slide an old, used bicycle tire tube over the chains. I tried it - the fit is perfect, and with a little armour-all, they shine up nice and black. Just make sure you cut a small hole at the lowest point of the "U" (I used a hole-punch) - this will allow for any water to drain out without rusting your nice new chains.
The tire tubes are much more flexible than a lot of the other hose-type solutions I've seen - they hang nicely, as opposed to the stiffer hoses that make the chains hang in a big "O" shape.
