I have a 2004 SCREW 4x4. I want to haul a gooseneck horse trailer. Has anyone put that type of hitch on. I have a guy saying he has done it before. Trailer weights about 3,500 empty, with horse's it will go to about 6,500 pounds. I have the 3.73 limited slip rear end with the trailer tow package. Any comments would be appreciated.
what do you have for engine/trans? Rated gvw of the truck? I pull a goose Moritz 20+5 14,000 gvw deckover trailer. Light weight 4950lbs, with a 79 250 and a 97 250 powerstroke no problems with either. I always thought the 150 was a little light for pulling goose, (dad's 96 150 shows the weight when I hook up the Moritz 3 horse slant bumper pull trailer with 3 horses)
But I've seen lots of people pulling with them.... If you've got enuf engine to pull it, and good brakes to stop it you should be alright. Just remeber to load the trailer right.
I have a Regular cab 6 1/2 bed with a 5th wheel hitch on it.
A couple of issues. More'n likely you have a 5 1/2' bed. This may mean a special type of hitch and prevent you from centering your load directly over the rear axle.
Second, mine is an FX4. Due to the height of the FX4 bed being several inches above normal, a special hitch had to be ordered for mine.
Other than that, no issues. I've already towed 7,500 with mine and will soon be trying out 8,500. My truck had to work to tow 7,500 but it was not an issue. I am not objectionalbe to making a truck work for a living. I suspect the gas mileage will be in the cellar, but you can't have everything.
I saw a quote recently. Bad mileage for a car = good mileage for a house.
