I am considering propane to run my new project. It is a 4x4 that will see some extreme angles. Has anyone ever done this. What is the cost? What are the performance issues? Would EFI be better?
Thanks
I ran propane in a tow truck once. It had a 370 Lima engine in it. I don't know if the 370 is gutless in gas form but it sure was on propane. Propane has less energy than gasoline but has a higher octane so I think you need to have higher than normal compressions to run it. I can't beleive your thread got to the bottom of the page with no replies. I didn't even see it earlier. Wierd!
Thanks, Sean
Sorry greg, No Desiels. I don't know the first thing about wirking on them. I read that you can run 12:1 CR with lpg. It is supposed to have a octane of 100. I just have never seen a hipo lpg setup. Or any lpg setup for that matter. It was a suggestion from the Off-road forum. Which by the way was very unpleasant. I think they were probly just making fun of me when they suggested this. I won't be going back.
I think you would be much happier with EFI on a gasoline engine. It would be unaffected by angles, give great throttle response, and usually better mileage. Then you can use tried and true engine mods. There was a time in this area when Propane powered trucks were the rage, and everybody who had one was bragging up how cool they were. Interestingly, every person I knew who had one doesn't have one anymore.
I think rusty has done the fuel injection thing and is having good luck with it. That was you right Rusty? I wonder how well those truck avenger carbs actually work.
A good friend on mine had a mid 70's F150 4x4 that he ran on propane and gasoline. This truck was indestructable. He never had a problem using propane. He wasn't interested in speed. He would still have the truck today if it wasn't for that drunk driver
I have only seen two or three propane four by's, and Larry's was by far the best. It was probably the exception to the rule from what I've heard since. Just wanted to let you know...it can be done with propane.
Yep it was me that did the fuel injection. It's a 700cfm Holley TBI system. You simply have a 4-barrel throttle body with 4 injectors on top spraying fuel down into each barrel. It comes complete with the Commander 950 ECU, and all the appropriate speed-density sensors, including an O2 sensor that I welded into the collector. I could see where you could run the thing at any angle needed.
If anyone gets one of these, I'll e-mail you the ECU map I'm using on mine so you can have a starting reference point for an FE. No FE maps are included with the system.
Thanks for all the feedback. I was thinking of simplicaty with the propane. It seems simple from what I have read. Although the donar truck is a 92 F250 with all the EFI stuff. It still has the injectors and fuel rails no engine). I wounder how hard it would be to get my notor working with the factory EFI. Just have to have the intake drilled for the injectors and adapt a throttle body to it. Do you think it would be worth it?
