I have a 01 F350 SD V10 4x DRW LB. I'm about to pick up a 3-horse gooseneck living quarters trailer. Loaded, it probably weighs maybe 8k-9k. I don't see any probs towing it but I've been thinking about trying to get a little more power. Don't intend to do heavy mods but did a cat back replacement from stock. Local muffler shop put on an IMCO heavy duty truck muffler with pipe. Been reading the threads about tuners and thought about a Superchip Microtuner. Questions are: Would a tuner do anything for me and would it be worth the money? Since I'm running stock, would I just be whistling in the wind. Any advice, thoughts, experiences????? Thanks in advance.
Okay, first thing: it will help but don't expect miracles with that kind of load. On a Powerstroke a performance tune would help the truck pull that kind of load without a problem... but the V10 just doesn't have the torque of the PSD.
Here's how a tuner impacts a vehicle. Imagine you're in a small car, perhaps an Escort or a Cavalier. All the seats are occupied and you're going up a hill on a hot day with the A/C. You turn off the A/C and suddenly the car has more power because its not running the A/C compressor... not so much extra HP that it feels like a shot of nitrous but enough to make a difference getting that load up people up the hill. This effect is what a tuner will do for your V10. If you get it from www.motorhaven.com there is a money back guarantee and currently a rebate on them (put 1000 in the coupon code box at checkout).
Ken, thank you for the input. Your analogy made it real clear. I don't expect biiiig results but any improvement is fine by me. Is the Superchip Tuner the one to go with for me? If I read all the catalogs right, I don't think Diablo makes one for the V10??
From what I gather from the thread, to get the best perf I need to use premium. In California that's 91. Am I correct? Again, thanks for your help and I will get it from motorhaven.
