Overheating Problem

I Have A 74 F250 4x4 Thath I Put An 83 460. It Has A Mild Cam And Some Heads Off Of A 429. It Is Bored .060 Over. The Problem I Am Having Is If I Am In Mudhole It Starts To Get Hot On Me. I Have An Aluminum Rad, Electric Pusher Fans, Regular Fan With Clutch. It Still Gets Hot After A While. Is There Anything Else That I Can Do To Cool This Motor Off.

Sounds like airflow is not the problem, so maybe water volume is. You might want to try a high-flow water pump. Anyone else with a suggestion?

Also, you might try backing off on your antifreeze mix to around 70/30 or 80/20. Water is a more efficient heat conductor than the antifreeze solution. You can buy yourself a couple of degrees by thinning the mix. The downside is that you will need to flush your system more often, and it's would be a good idea to get a sacrificial-anode radiator cap (which is actually a good idea in any case).

I Forgot To Mention That I Have Some 'cool Like Ice Water" Water Treatment. I'm Not Sure What A Sacrificial Anode Rad Cap Is.

The Water Treatment Is Already In The Rad Also. I Forgot To Mention That. It Has Been In About Two Or Three Months.

A sacrificial anode is nothing but a chunk of zinc suspended on a piece of cable that is attached to the radiator cap. Electrolysis will attack the metal with the weakest bonds first, and zinc has a weaker molecular bond than aluminum or steel. While not a replacement for keeping your coolant fresh, hanging the anode in your system will keep the electolysis monster at bay if your solution gets a little weak.

Though most people don't realize it, you have one in your hot water heater as well. It's made to be replaceable, though most people don't take the time to do it.

Any time you run a current through two dissimilar metals you get electrolysis. With the current systems running a hodgpodge of metals (alum, brass, steel, iron) and lots of electrical goodies that ground through the block, electrolysis is a very real problem. I've seen an aluminim manifold on a late model Chevy truck that was ruined in a matter of months. It was dissolved from the inside out.

Your fan clutch could be bad and do you have a shroud? Also, check engine timeing and if auto trans, check fluid, it can heat up your system.

I Don't Have A Shroud On It But I Didn't Know What To Kind Of Shroud To Order Because I Had To Customize The Rad Support To Fit The Radiator. The Fan Clutch Has Only Been 3 Or 4 Months. I Thought About Taking The Clutch Off And Using A Fan Clutch Eliminator, And Having The Fan Run All The Time. Do You Think This Is A Good Idea?

Should be able to take one of the original type shrouds and customize it as well. I have used the top and bottom, cut one in half sideways, mount them so they don't hit anything, then added sheet metal/plastic in the spaces on the sides. It will draw more air even with just the top or bottom half. Good luck.

check your spark plugs and make sure you are not running lean. Afte you eliminate that take a look at the fan clutch and replace if neccessary. Finally check to see that the electrical fans are moving air the same way as the engine fan ie. if in back of the rad (engine side) be sure that they are pulling air, if in front (grill side) make sure they are pushing air. finally if all checks out look at flushing your system. If everything is clean and working then you may have to get a bigger rad. or add an oil cooler.

Definitely try a shroud first, it can make a huge difference. I built a simple shroud from a plastic barrel once, while it wasnt as good as a full coverage shroud it was a definite improvement. Also, you might think about finding a way to let the hot air out from under the hood.
