I'm about to do exhaust on my 99' x-cab and plan on going with a flowmaster muffler, my question is which one do I need. I want a deep rumble (no cackling) so do I need the 40 series or the 50 series. And which in/out configuration do I need. Would like to go out with dual 3" but all I see is dual 2 1/2" out. Which inlet do I need? offset, centered and which size? I plan on coming out with both behind the passenger side rear wheel (stock position).
From what flowmaster says, the 40s are the loudest. From what the guy at the muffler shop here told me, if you go with a 3" pipe there isn't enough back pressure on the engine and it messes with the computers. He said anything bigger then 2 1/2" was actually damaging. And as for the exhaust, get rear exit, it sounds better inside and outside of the truck, not to mention the chrome tips look pretty good behind a chrome bumper.
Check out Midas. They have these ones called Ravin's and they've got an awesome deep throaty sound. www.goravin.com When you buy the flowmasters you are paying for the name, and pretty much name only. All performance mufflers have technology now a days. Just because it's the "name" doesnt' mean it's the best. Flowmasters were about 475 on my truck, and the ravin's were 350.
Hope this helps ya out some. If ya need anything more, let me know.
think about going on a trip- the interior noise [resonance] on the 40 series and even the 50 series can begin to get annoying after a while. esp. if your other half, assuming you have such a person, will probably complain. the single chamber 40 series being the loudest for street use, the dual chamber 50 would be best choice i think if your staying with flowmaster. as above poster said, do not go with 3". an stock engine must have some backpressure. it's a fine line sort off. that's why gibson has hi $ stuff, their tuned to your engine, make, etc. as far as the inlet, that depends on how your muffler is placed under there, how much room you have, etc. you need to look and see if you can use a centered inlet, or if space is tight, you may have to have an off set inlet, and watch that driveshaft! i had prob. w/'91, it wouldn't take an off set inlet, it would hit the dshaft. but keep in mind there are many take-offs of the flowmaster, but once you've installed it, then you can't take it back. glad to be of some help....paul
I just installed a Flo-Pro 2 1/2 in dual 2 1/4 out for under $300. Bought the muffler from completeexhaust.com for under $50 and had the custom exhaust installed at a local shop for $250. The system sounds great and I gained another MPG bringing my total up to 17 MPG now. Thought about Flowmaster but the cost was over $350. With Flowmaster, Gibson, Magnaflow, etc.. you are definitely paying for the name. I don't know that you will gain much, if any, power with any cat back exhaust system, but if you go with larger pipes you really stand a good chance of losing low end torque due to loss of back pressure.
I paid 295 for a complete Gibson 3 inch cat back performance exhaust system, no shipping or taxes. It took ony an hr plus to install and I am very pleased with it! Not loud at all, it sounds good. I put on a K&N FIPK at the same time and I can sure tell a difference. It was well worth $, and effort.
I used the Original 40 Series on my 1999 4.6. I got 2.5 pipes, Flowmaster 40, and 15in chrome tips for $266 at Black's Tire in Lumberton, NC. The tone is awesome... and its fairly loud, cab noise is pretty high, and its loud outside also.
a 50 series sounds good....on my bronco i had long tube headers cut the middle cat out and gutted the first put a 50 series on it....that sounded mean...but it ran real lean so i had to but a jet chip to get it to run richer......
nobody talks about the flowmaster 30's! Had them on my 3.0 ranger, sounded great it was loud, way louder than 40's, there was no hint of rice in that lil 3.0 either, i aint got that truck no more, about to get the same muffler on my 4.6 4x4offroad f150
it had great tone, idlein it sounded like a small block v8, woulda sounded great if i had a cam to put that chop in it
I wouldn't mind going out the back but pulling the snowmobile trailer for 14 hrs to go out west would be pretty hard to take. the salt shield on the trailer seems to send all the exhaust noise RIGHT back at ya.
Mark manz, where did you get your system at? Is it just one 3" pipe/out? where does it come out at?
40 series flows can get on your nerves sometimes especially when there is a load on the motor like towing going up hills The 50 series has a nice respectable rumble but on the highway it tames down some. Do not use 3 inch 2.5 is what you need. Go to Flowmaster web site they explain the diameter thing pretty well
