i was driving to work yesterday when all of a sudden my accelertor wouldnt work. you would pump and not get any reaction. so i ended up drifting to work with using the choke to get there. took off the carbuertor and it looks like the bracket (that holds the spring that opens the valve on the carbuertor to let in gas) broke in half. like the metal literally tore in half, so now the spring, when you press the gas pedal, doesnt spring at all, thus giving me no gas to the engine...ANYWAYS after explaining that, i need to replace that bracket and assembly, but i have no idea what its called or what to ask for at a parts store. already went to a junkyard near by and all the old trucks didnt have anything left of that sort inside. much help needed. thanks in advance
I am not 100% positive what you mean, but from what it sounds like, its time for a new caburetor!
Also, at the junkyard, you don't have to check just Ford trucks, Ford cars should have the same or very similar carb, as will some AMC Jeep vehicles. My 73 jeep Wagoneer came with an autolite 2 barrel carb.
Dont know what your driving, but when I dropped new 390 into my '72, I scrapped that Dr. Suess looking linkage contraption, and made my own. Simple as a piece of 1/8" steel rod bent at the right places, drilled on the ends and locked in with small washers and cotter pins. Has worked perfectly since. One of these days, I will upgrade carb end with a carb linkage bushing which is easy fit with Holley carb.
I did kinda the same with my 70 F100. Had a bucket handle laying around. One end was already bent in an "S",so I just weaved it into the pedal link, bent the other end, flattened, drilled a hole, then slid my return spring to hold it together.
Make sure you always run a double throttle return spring, one inside the other, for safety. From what you say the throttle return springs did not break but a bracket did. The most common failure point is a broken return spring which can lead to a wide open throttle situation that could be dangerous.
ive just replaced that linkage in my truck last week. good luck trying to find it at a salvage yard lol. it took me two weeks to find one and cost 25 bucks lol . ive had suggestions to run a straight cable but wanted to keep an original appearance . good luck to you pard
Thought I noticed a sketch in freightrain's gallery regarding the linkage.
This is the setup I went with also. Not actually sure if it works with the stock motocraft carb though. Guess it depends if the throttle **** is on the top or bottom(push or pull) of the linkage.
