intermittent ac problem

problem: my ac on my 92 2WD shorty is cutting out on me sometimes. i have no idea where to start on what the problem may be, but i can give some details on things that have been ocurring on a regular basis. usually, i'll start my van up in the morning, and crank the ac up. it takes maybe a minute or 2 before it starts cooling (naturally) and then sometimes, it'll be like it just switched over to vent. no cooling, but fan blows with no prob. even when i get going...nothing. turn the van off, wait a minute or two, start it up again, and it's working just fine. any ideas as to what this might be? i'd greatly appreciate it. if you need to know more, i'll give you as much info as i can.

intermittent ac problem

Try checking the gap on the compressor clutch. If it is a little too wide, it will be hesitant to engage properly, and can becomre intermittent. Should have a gap about the thickness of a credit card, and can be adjusted using shims, without discharging the refrigerant.
Two other possibilities are 1)the cycling switch on the accumulator may be lazy, or the WOT relay may be dropping out as if you had used Wide Open Throttle, thus disengaging the clutch.

intermittent ac problem

I went to the mechanic, and wouldn't you know it, it was the WOT relay that had gone bad. Only cost about $30.00 and I've got cold AC now. Thanks for all the help and the knowledge=power.
