I have a 93 Aerostar 3.0L it worked great until something finally happened, yesterday I just started it up I was rolling down the hill then when I got to a stop sign I started to press the peddle it was moving fine until I got the speedometer got to 25 MPH then the engine was reving loud and it wasn't shifting. If I press the peddle alittle more it will kick into the next gear. WHATS GOING ON!?! :-(
If I keep driving it the problem will go away, but the next day its back! ????
Vacuum modulator or vacuum hose to it on transmission. if this fails, transmission moves shift points to WOT settings. will shift at high speeds and very hard
I have the same problem with a 1986 BII - trans is good shape (rebuilt 2-3 yr ago) - fluid is clean and full....is the VACUUM MODULATOR easy to change??
Did you change the fluid and filter recently? The reason I ask, when I first got my Aero used, I did mine. The new filter did not have an o-ring and the old one came out with the old filter. I did not notice this at the time, nor did I know an o-ring was required.
My van would shift like you describe. Overfilling it helped some, but I had to drop the pan again and install a new o-ring. Shifting problem solved.
Vacuum modulator is trivially easy to change, located passenger side front of trans, held by 1 bolt. Inexpensive, but first make sure vacuum tube is attached at the engine and modulator. better to reinstall a tube for free than replace a perfectly good modulator. Check inside of tubing, if oil present, mod is shot. ALWAYS, do the cheap stuff first, NEVER throw money at a problem, at least in my case, I run out of money first if I don't follow my own advice.
VanGo:
I did not chg the fulid myself, Ford did - I hope they replaced the 0-ring. Good point though - will remember if I end up taking in for service.
ken1mod:
I will check the vac tube. Where does it run from and to in the engine??
Also, the problem seems to be more prevelant when the engine is warmer - as well as the tranny will finaly shift smoother when i let up on the gas versus apply it - just some more info.

Thanks to both
Of course you know that if Ford messed up, they will also cover it up. You will never know unless you see for yourself.
I don't want to lead you down the wrong path but your symptoms are exactly like mine were. Too bad it's such a hassle to verify. The modulator check is much easier. Just look right on the unit. Pull the hose end off and inspect. It may be hard to see, the catcon hides it.

this almost sounds like what mine is doing, but I believe mine is valve body related. sadly, if you took it in for a fluid change, this is probably beyond your scope to repair. this is only an assumption on my part. many apologies, if I'm mistaken. as Vango said, if it's only an O-ring, ford should take care of it. my advice.....take it back, explain the trouble and give them these suggestions. if you want to attempt the valve body cleaning yourself, let us know, we can walk you through it.

the modulator is on the passenger side of the trans, just above the pan. should be a vacuum line attached, if not, it's a little harder to find, but not that hard to find in either case. it's a round piece that sticks out from the trans, has a nipple on it for the vacuum line.the supply end is located on the rear of the engine, near the pcv valve. removing the doghouse helps a little. again, apologies if I've made this too simplistic, just trying to cover the bases.
