Hello everyone, my name is Joe - first time poster. I have a question that I hope someone can help me with with. I have a 1994 Ranger XLT with the 4.0 V6. I just turned over 100,000 miles last week on it. The problem I've been having is that if I go somewhere and let the truck sit for 20-30 minutes I can't get it to start back up. The engine will turn over, but it will sputter and choke giving it any gas. If I let it sit for another 45 minutes to an hour it will start right away. Can vapor lock happen on a fuel injected system? I am unable to fix anything like this myself. Would like any advice on what to tell a mechanic so I don't go in blind. Thanks in advance!
Joe
Vapor lock is not that common, but I suppose it's possible. Sounds more like a leaky fuel pressure regulator, or maybe one or two of your injectors are leaking down.
A couple of things to try is, during the non-start period: (1) pull off the vacuum hose that goes to the FPR (the FPR located on your fuel rail, looks like a small metal mushroom) and see if there is any gas in it, if so, it's definetely bad; (2) try and get a fuel pressure reading.
Based on what you say, #1 you can do yourself, #2 you might want to let a mechanic do.
