I was just reading fordpower2003's thread about performance injectors and in there was a comment about not wanting to got over or near 500 horse with stock powdered metal rods. I have heard this before, I was just wondering where one can go for aftermarket rods and what are good brands to get. Mine isn't anywhere near 500 horse but I hope that some day it will I was just wondering for future reference what to get for rods.
Not to bash you or anything but I still want a few more opions on it. if you are right thats AWESOME!!! cuz I have a 97 and does anyone know what teh limit is on the older rod, 94.5-2000???
They switched to the PMR's in '01.......but some of the early '01s still had forged rods (I believe cookie88 has an '01 that came with forged rods)......I wouldn't want to push much more than 400 rwhp with the PMRs. Although, I'm not sure it's so much a horsepower number you have to stay below......rather that you need to make sure that the tuning that you are running doesn't over advance injection timing and cause high cylinder pressure spikes. I know it's possible to throw a rod with less than 400rwhp.....
Anyway, you could upgrade to a set of the earlier forged rods as was mentioned (DPS used to sell a set of forged rods for around $400....not sure if they still do).
Other guys who are building up motors for high hp have talked about billet rods (I've read that they go for $1800-2400, if I remember correctly) and rods that have been polished, peened and Cryo'd (not sure on cost).

Diesel rod
There are guys making 500-600rwhp on stock forged rods
If your engine was built before October of 2000 it will have forged rods in it. I believe 10/16/00 is the actual cutoff date. There is also a plug in the block you can remove and look at them to remove any doubt.
