Oil pressure problem

I bought an 88 ranger with a 2.9 two weeks ago and now I am having oil pressure problems. When at a warm idle the oil pressure dummy light starts to flicker until i rev it up, and now I think I amn hearing the lifters tapping , I was thinking maybe installing a k&n oil filter because they have helped gain oil pressure in my other rigs and switching to a heavier oil like some 15w-40 delvac which I have pleanty of. Please help, I have worked all summer to buy this truck and now I need to make sure I dont mess up the motor. Thanks to all who reply.

P.S. The truck never did this the first week I had it.

I would put a real guage on it so you will know what the true pressure is. 10 pounds per 1000 rpm is ok.

I have an 88' 2.3L that always reads fine while driving, and when it is first started. But it is low at idle and when warmed up. I also don't have a real gauge but I did find where some of my pressure was being lost.

If you check your valve cover gaskets and oil pan gasket for leaks you may find where some psi is being lost. I also had some old cracked hoses that didn't help either. I have replaced all but the oil pan gasket, and the pressure improved, but not quite normal yet.

Would it be all right to run 15w-40 in a 2.9?

Well I put the K&N filter on and put in some 15w-40 delvac and it got rid of the problem.

Putting in the heavier weight oil will give you higher oil pressure but the root cause of your problem is most likely worn crankshaft bearings. If you continue to have low oil pressure you will need to replace them.

Ive heard camshaft bearings or a clogged pump screen is the common causes on a 2.9.
