99 Ranger XLT SC 4X4 Off Road Package. I have an odd problem that hopefully I can get some help with. When I am driving the, the emergency brake light will come on after I brake, when I lift up on the pedal. It will come on for 1-2 seconds, then go off. I make sure to pull the emergency brake release all the way out. It does it most often at lower speeds (under 35 MPH), and generally when I do a "rolling stop", like in rush hour traffic. I slow down, and when I release the brake, the red EB light comes on, then goes off. Does anyone have an idea what is causing this?
there is only two things that will turn that light on one is the ebrake and the other is the fluid level in the brake master cylinder if it is low it means that you should look at your brakesthey are probably getting to the point of needing replaced. I have found that if you just fill the brakes fluid back up when you replace the brakes it over flows the master cylinder.
I'd also add, if the fluid is low, it could also be caused by a system leak.
So, IMMEDIATELY check your brake master cylinder's fluid level & top it off with FRESH fluid of the correct type, called out in your owners manual. (MotorCraft makes a very good fluid, I use their DOT-3 fluid exclusively.)
If low then check all lines, hoses & wheel cylinders for leaks, if you find any, have it put right PRONTO.
As has been pointed out. if you do a brake job, remove about 1/2 the fluid from the brake master cylinder, to prevent it's running over, BEFORE you compress the rotor pad piston for removal.
Thank you both for you replies. The brake pads were down to about 1/4 inch, so I got to them just in time as they only had 8,000 miles on them. Just an FYI; all-ceramic pads don't last very well in the desert.
