check engine ligh came on, on my 98 explorer sport so my friend checked obd II codes and it shows that there was a problem with MAF (out of range).
Did some searching on the web, and found out that unless MAF is totally dead, they can be cleaned with some contact cleaner. And that should fix the problem.
Does anyone know if this is true? Will it work?
I don't want to spend $300 on a MAF sensor
Well considering how easy it is to clean the sensor it certainly would be worth it to try.
When you get it out if one or both of the wires are broken you know you need a new one. They may just be dirty. I used electrical contact cleaner which I sprayed on to a q-tip then carefully cleaned the wires. Don't spray directly on them. Be sure to disconnect the battery negative cable for at least 10 minutes to reset the computer. Good luck and hope this helps.
Use carb+choke cleaner you do not want to leave any residue on the maf wires and spray it on _dont_ touch the wires as the spacing is critical to the proper operation of the sensor.
The MAF works like so one set of wires is a heating element and the other set of wire's resistance varies with temperature based on a known temperature of the heater the resistance of the sensor is proportionate to the mass of air flowing through the body of the MAF.
