I have an 04 F150 with a 5.4 and we pulled the same code (P0340) and we replaced both Cam Positioning Sensors and tested the wiring. Yet still has the same code popped up. We took it to the local dealership who said that the code was due to a faulty alternator and so we replaced that as well and it still did not fix the problem. Has anyone had a similar issue and can hopefully point us in the right direction?

P0340 code F-150, 2005

I have the same code. My question is which side is Bank 1?? I'd rather not have to take both cmp sensors off if i don't need to.

2005 F150, 5.4 problems

Thanks Racerguy, so far i am loving the site.

I just replaced my passenger side valve cover and replaced my timing chain guide. Now i have several other problems that need fixed including a vacuum leak somewhere and a P0340 code that i am trying figure out. Any idea how to find a vacuum leak in my system?

What makes you think you have a vacuum leak? Symptoms?
Check for obvious hoses off first if you haven't done that already.
If that checks out ok you can spray around the intake manifold with some spray carb cleaner with the engine at idle. If the RPM changes either up or down when you spray then you have found a leak where you're aiming the carb cleaner.

2005 F150, 5.4 problems

Yeah i tried checking all the hoses. One problem is i don't know where all the vacuum hoses are. I tried the carb cleaner but didn't see a change in the rpm's. I think i need to try again with the carb cleaner. I have looked for a diagram of the vacuum hoses but couldn't find anything.

Symptoms: dies in idle but only when i am in drive or reverse. Small hissing sound in engine. Got a P0012, P0174, P0171 codes.

I have a 1995 Ranger with a 4.0 and a manual trans. I have the one piece cam position sensor that is discontinued by Ford and unavailable at the ford dealer. is the newer style CPM compatable with the older version? The plug is different, but it shouldnt be that big of a deal to change the plug and splice the newer style plug to my harness. Has anyone done this? Are all 4.0 CPMs the same? Ranger, explorer and areostar? Any advice or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Your best bet would be a junkyard - or so it used to be.

Unfortunately, now that many thousands of perfectly good pre-96 Rangers have recently been crushed into scrap metal (pursuant to the "cash-for-clunkers" debacle), you most likely will have a hard time finding a junked vehicle that has the parts you need. And if you do find one, count on paying a huge premium for the used part.
