hi i'm ron, i'm new on this web site. before i start i'd like to say hi and hope i can contribute as much as i ask. i just got hold of an intake off an ft big truck motor. it's either the 361 or 391 ,i'm not sure. the question is ,will the intake work on a 390 fe block. the outside looks identical to the fe ,but the parts store says the gaskets are different numbers. are the ports bigger, and will it make any difference if i use it. i have an fe interchange book but it is very vague on this aspect. any help or advice will be greatly appreciated. thank you in advance, ron.
Welcome to a great forum! I do not know alot about the fe block's. You might want to try to post this in the engine forum, they can probably tell you more.
The water pump setup is different, and I think the bypass in the front of the intake is different, but could be wrong there. Been a while since I saw the medium duty motors.
They don't have an exhaust passage in the intake, or it's in a different spot. Also the ports are much smaller. I don't think the FT's ever came with 4bbl unless it was in a big truck or bus, all I've ever seen was 2bbl. But they were still pretty strong.
yeah i have never seen a ft 4bbl all i saw was 2bbl but even then a fe or a ft could move a loaded school bus and they did too they put them in tow trucks too
i want to thank everyone for the advice and responses. i am not a novice at building fords, but there are a lot that i don't know. the person that thinks there is nothing left to learn, doesn't know anything.i wish i had the trucks back that i sold foolishly. the 390 that i have is in a 46 ford coupe. i will send pics of what i have done so far. i've come a long way with it, but i still have a long way to go. about another year. money is the biggest factor. i do a lot of scrounging, to get parts the cheapest way. i'm not afraid to repair another man's throw aways. any way, i'm going off on a tangent here. thank you all for the help. i'll keep on searching. you all have a great day, ron.
One other thing to toss in the mix, seems I recall the hole for the distributor being larger on the FT manifold than the standards, requiring a filler or the use of the FT dizzy.
