water leak

About 3 weeks ago I wrote that I had a leak at the elbow after I put a new themostat in. Several of you wrote and offered several suggestions. Here is what I did: nothing. I drove it around town and checked the water level as it leaked. It sat in the garage for a while and one day I noticed the water spot on the floor had dried up. Last Sunday went for a longer drive, about 30 miles, and had no problems and when I checked the water level the next day it was full and there was no leak.

What should I do? Can I expect it to not leak, has the gasket sealed, or should I take it off and do it again. I beleive in if it ain't broke don't fix it. Give me some advice.

Leak

I am in a similar situation. I had the top end apart for add ons, and when it was back together and started there was a medium drip from the thermo housing after the motor heated up. After it cooled down no leak. I had installed an air bleeder valve in top of the manifold behind the thermostat to assure all air was evacuated as the coolant was added. I looked into the top of the radiator when it was cold and it was full to the brim. The leak looked very much like it was coming through one of the bolt holes in the housing, between the housing and the bolt, and was surprising. What I think is that I overfilled the radiator, there was no air in the top tank, hydraulic pressure built with temp and thus the leak. Haven't had a chance yet to try it all out, but before restart plan to drain a little antifreeze from the radiator and see if the problem shows up again.
If it does I will put the thermostat housing on a piece of emory cloth on a flat surface and will surface its face. Mike

M advice is to leave it alone, and go buy two capsules of that powder stop leak for insurance, and drive it, but always carry extra water.....Janet

Abe, Go down to the drugstore and pick up a pack of Beeman's brand chewing gum. If the leak pops up every then and again, just chew up a stick and strategically place in where you need it - that'll get ya through harvest season.

Just kiddin....... My 239 did this all the time, and yes I did use Beeman's several times but I was just goofin around. Just like Janet said, a gallon of water behind the seat came in handy. Once I get my ol 239 rebuilt, I'll be curious to see if the periodic leak goes away.

I wish everyone had a good sense of humour like that Bessie, it should be more a family of Ford owners type club, you know what i mean? Tell you what though if Abes leak does show back up, for a person without a lot of tools you can, take small nailes and nail a sheet of 280 grit sandpaper on a board and just run that housing up and down, and with tar gasket a person will probably get one (the thermostat housing) flat enough to not leak..Speaking of humourous, oh my, Bessi i thought i had a good find on a 57 ford 292 engine , you should read my topic called good find on 57 292, you will laugh for sure....Janet
