1988 F150 Non-functioning AC

I am looking at buying an '88 F150 Lariat with only 43000 miles. On first look it seems to be in excellent condition except that the AC blows hot air (and driver's door elec lock switch doesn't work). The compressor doesn't even cycle. I don't yet know if the system is even charged.
Any advice on what I might be looking at? If I have to replace compressor, etc., roughly how much would I be looking at? Other possibilities? Also, other potential problems to look for with this model and mileage?
Many thanks.

Hello wds413 and Welcome to FTE

On an 88 it could be any of a number of things. I would suspect though that the R12 left the system some time ago and several things will need to be replaced. The compressor is probably ok but it needs to be determined if the system was opened up. With those low miles I would guess that the seals slowly leaked out the R12.

Smile Thanks!

Thanks for the insight. It adds-up with what I have learned since my original post--the AC was blowing cold, then cool, then warm air. Sounds exactly as if the freon has leaked.

Anybody have any thoughts on the merits of repairing the existing system vs. converting to the newer refrigerant? I'm thinking my preference would be to keep it as original as possible given the low mileage and otherwise excellent condition.

Thanks.

If you have the means, I would repair the existing system. It will cool better with the R12.

It will probably also be a lot cheaper to repair the existing system even with the high price of the r-12. A true 134 conversion that will work and be dependable could cost a bundle. Beware of "coversion kits".

Thanks

Thanks for the input Tinman. Seems like there are a lot of "kits" and other special deals out there, but I can't believe it would be as simple as some would have us believe to do it right.
