'Just returned from 1800 mile round trip, Sacramento to 80 mile south of Tucson Arizona in '96 4.0 extended, 113K miles. I got 27+ mpg, in 107 degree F. weather with AC off, 25 with AC on, at 69 mph on cruise control. I was amazed. My tires are Michelins, 33 psi. I have a K&N air filter, but I think it was just the steady cruise control driving that did it. I am gonna keep this thing until the bare metal disentegrates.
I think 25 MPG is very good, in that you've got some grades to pull. My CA to AZ run was pretty flat. The best I could get out of my previous 4.0 1995 Aerostar was 24.
on our recent vacation to the coast , the best i was able to get was 22 mpg. that was mostly in pennsylvania, on the turnpike, at a constant 60-65 mph. thats the best i've ever gotten, we were quite loaded down though, kids, gears etc. i was pretty happy with that.

91 ext. 4.0, 160 tho mi.
You guys without the 4WD are doing considerably better than those with. Since I've replaced the heads on my '95 4WD, the best I've gotten so far has been 20.9. That included some grades so I'm hoping it'll get over 21 where it's flat.
Sounds about like my 93 AWD. I have gotten 15 on the road while towing a 2,800 lb. boat, though, which is pretty darn good. I think I've gotten 22-23 once or twice when doing lots of 45-55 mph driving. It will be interesting to see what my latest 93 AWD "shorty" will do, it definitely is peppier due to less weight on the body and I took the middle seat out but I'm not holding my breath out for much.
