transmission / overdrive ?
I have an '88 7.3 4WD ext cab(about to be turbo'ed) with a C-6. I am not happy with fuel mileage or highway RPM. I have been thinking about aftermarket overdrives, but $$$.
It was suggested to me to get a Ford overdrive tranny with a locking torque converter. (I don't know for sure but guess this would be the E40D ?) I have heard they are not as reliable as the C-6, and are electronically controlled where the C-6 is not.
Am I making the right guess as to which transmission ? Are my assumptions correct ?
Any other transmission options avilable ?
Any help or info greatly appreciated.

ZF 5 manual five speed will work with your transfer case.
M6HD is a manual six speed that will require changing the transfer case as well.
Either manual tranny will be a lot of work to put in the truck, dollars will probably be about the same as the overdrive units from Gear Vendors or US Gear till you get all the parts and labor included.
From what I have read and seen of the E4OD, I think I would go for the overdrive unit. I think it will be cheaper in the long run.
