Ok, my dad drove the ranger after i had put the chip in. He first thought all the talk about the chip advancing timing and tuning the air fuel ratio was a bunch of B.S. He basically thought it was a big gimmik. After he drove it, he said he was really impressed. I dont think he's ever said that with any of the other mod's i've done to the truck. He took it out to a spot where thats about 1/4 of a mile long, also where he "test runs" his patrol car somtimes. The ranger made it to about 88 MPH where the 1/4 mile sign was, he said that he bets the ranger would be about nose to nose, if not, then a little bit ahead of one of the patrol cars.
I was also wondering about how long it takes the chip to take full effect? Because it seems like, it didnt really take effect until about 5 min of driving the truck? Then you could really tell, And especially at night, when the air is cooler, the thing just is about ready to take off. I'm so stoked, tommorow, i'm gonna cut off the old Cat, and put on a pipe, then later when i get more $, i'm going to run a dual in dual out high performance cat, and see how things go! i'm soo excited!
hazardiz, welcome to FTE. The chip would be the Diablo, available at motorhaven.com (click on the words "Parts Shop" in th upper right hand corner of this page.) FTE and Motorhaven are pretty much one, so buying from there supports this site. Also, there is currently a sale going on where you can get one for under $200, which is the best price you will find on any chip.
Definately agree that the chip is the single best mod you can do for a 4.0 short of forced induction.
Peter, what Octane are you running. I'v got mine tuned for the 91 octane gas we have here, it's a 92 octane tune, but I have run 90 octane and noticed no pinging or loss of power. So I'm hoping to add a 2nd performance tune to handle higher octane, as 92 became available within a month after me getting my chip. Basically I do notice a power difference with the chip, but I think there is more to be had.
We have 93 octane avalible, so on the sheet, i asked for them to tune it for 93. I"m not sure if it just comes with a standard tune of 92 and thats what its tuned to now though. I'm not sure. But it sure is nice either way
I've asked Ken, he said that 92 is the standard tune, but if you let them know that you have a higher octane available, the will tune accoringly. If you have 93 available and that's what you asked for, you've probably got a 94 octane tune, whcih is why you probably feel more power than I do. I've heard from a F150 owner with a chip that when he upgraded his tune from standard to a 94 tune, that it was even more noticeable than the original was from stock. I've just gotta find a way to sneak $100 past my wife so I can add the tune I want. I think I'm gonna keep the current one since the 90 octane E10 works very well with it.
