Can anyone help?? I have a 1988 Aerostar. As far as I can tell I am getting both fuel and spark. The engine dies at idle. It will die driving down the highway. It really doesn't make any difference what I am doing. If I wait 10 minutes it will start back up. Then it will be good for another 10 minutes to an hour. Needless to say this makes for fun commutes. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Sounds like your TFI Module could be failing (Thin Film Ignition). There are located on the distributor. You can normally pick up an after market for around $30.00
oh, one more thing. If you do change the TFI you will need to get the special tool to remove it. Its a deep socket thin walled 7/32 hex wrench. You can get that at most autopart stores for about $4.00.
Thank you for the information. I tried replacing that and unfortunately I am still having the same problem. Any other ideas would be appreciated. I only have a motorcycle for transportation right now and it is freezing out there.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 25-Nov-02 AT 03:59 PM (EST)]no i can't.but i have never heard the fuel pump running.so i don't know? Also I have noticed that when I do manage to get her up and running if I shut the hood then it stalls back out and won't start back up for another 5 to 10 minutes.
Next time it happens, have an assistant outside listen for the fuel pump. That will give you a clue as to what's going on. Something to consider is the fuel pump cutoff switch. You could try resetting it or wiggling it next time if you don't hear the fuel pump. You could also smack the tank in the area of the fuel pump if it isn't running. That can sometimes get a reluctant fuel pump to run.
I have had Dirty Air Filters do the same thing.
That could be whats wrong because you said it happens faster when you close the hood. Less clean air able to suck through the cracks.
Also like holding the choke closed......Flooding it out.
Thats why it could take 5-10min to restart.
Hey as dumb as this sounds I spent a month chasing this down on my 89 and I found out after changing a lot of electronic modules and coil etc. It ended up being the fuel filter I have 2 vans I use for delivering flowers and it happened to the second one as well 1 fuel filter and back on the road they go.
