No click or anything when starting

My truck was at maaco for about a month getting it all repaired, they called me today to say that it wasnt starting up. I went there and gave it a try to start, and all the lights work as well as the radio. I push the key forward and nothing. no click or anything. Is there a switch that the clutch has to hit? can that go bad? what fuses should i look for, or anything else. it is a 302 with a 4 speed granny tranny.

I would like to put transport plates on and drive it home, and not pay for a tow truck.

Thanks in advance!!
Ryan

i have the same problem with my 1980 f150 once in a while wich has gotten me some nice looks and even a stop by a cop the ignition module inside the dash has a bar going to it from the key to kick it over i think myne may have bent because some times it will work and some times it wont that i do is bypass my ignition starting it by hotwiring it take a screwdriver and find the starter sol located on the passenger side fender locate where the feed is to the sol and use the screwdriver to jump thecurrent from the power to the little red wire leading off the sol works for me but dont do it in front of a cop they kinda look at you funny

I used to not belive in grammar and punctuation too LOL

well they changed the passenger fender, maybe something got fouled up in that process.. as the guy at maaco said" were not engine mechanics, were body mechanics"

Sounds like they may have left a wire unhooked. Check all of your wiring around the newly installed fender. See if they removed the battery ground wire from the block. It is probably something they did if you didn`t have the problem before.

Maybe I missed it but what year and model? I can scan my Haynes

EDIT - Disregard, looks pretty simple and the same for all makes. Looks like Start on one side, Battery on the other side and the little round pip connector to the switch. In other words, simple one wire ignition hot to the relay that lets current go from one side to the other. All the other wires are just extraneous to feed "other" accessories.

If you have a battery cable on one side and a wire to the starter on the other side and the little wire with the round push on connector to the only place it can go, you have all you need.

If you have a meter, you can check and see if you have 12 volts when you hit the starter going from the solenoid to the starter that will then tell you if you have something bad before or at the solenoid or a bad connection at the starter or a bad starter.

It is very possible. It sounds to me like the engine ground or the hot wire going from the battery or fender mounted solenoid to the starter. Did they do any frame work? The engine needs to be grounded to the frame. They may have disconnected that. I have the factory wiring diagrams for a 1986. What do you need to know?

I had a similar problem a short time ago on my F350. Long story short, it was the Neutral Safety switch. The energizer wire to the starter relay runs through that switch...if you have power going in to the switch when you hit the key, but nothing coming out of the switch (which then goes to the starer relay) it's your safety switch. You might want to check it out.

About $35 at NAPA, and about 20 minutes to replace (have to crawl under the truck on a C6).

Hope that helps.

Ryan,

Go down to your local parts store and buy a chilton manual...it has the diagrams you need. It's money well spent, trust me. Many things will become clear.

From my expeirence on non-fuel injected vehicles, the blue/pink wire goes from the ignition switch (on the column behind the gauges), through the neutral safety switch, and to the starter relay. I think on FI trucks, it makes a stop through the ECU for some reason, but I don't know why.

I hope that helps!

a haynes manual is an exelent idea tell you how to change the oil or rebuild an entire vehicle also give you shortcuts to make a job pass a little bit easier pick up one at your local autozone for like 15 bucks deffinately money well spent

p.s. wiring diagrams are in the back of the book right before the index
