Yesterday i pulled codes on my 92 f-150. the check engine light would come on and stay on for about 30-60 seconds. It wouldnt come on all the time just once in a while. well the codes say that the system is rich bank 1. I replaced the O2 sensor about 5000 miles ago. today I cleaned the air filter a K&N FIPK filter, the air pump is not hooked up. It runs fine idles a little rougher then a new vehicle but I am going to run seafoam through it next week. It does run a little rich can smell it when it was scanning for codes. What should i do to correct this or should I do nothing just run the seafoam.
The light might come on once every month there is really no real intervals that it comes on and usually will come on one day then come on again the next day then that will be it for a while.
What kind of hyway mileage are you getting? Its an 8 cyl?
It seems like if its just one bank, then it could be a vacuum leak on that side and the O2 sensor is telling the computer to richen up that side only.
My '92 4.9L had one of the vacuum lines going to the A/C box litterally rot away which created a vacuum leak big enough that I almost went out to buy an O2 sensor for it.
But in your case on that V*, you may want to get some WD40 and spray around the intake where it bolts to the heads. Bad Gasket?
If its not fixed soon all that fuel will wash away the oil on the cylinders and wear out that bank of cylinders. Hopefully not on your way to Vegas.
It is a 302 has one O2 sensor on the highway i get about 15-16 running 65 in some hilly areas i replaced the fuel regulator at the same time as the O2 sensor since it was bad. never thought about checking for vacc leaks. Which side is bank one?
Actually, I'd find the stuff to hook that air pump back up, that can make it send a rich code, it will keep the CAT converter cool, and help to burn the excess fuel in the exhaust stream (what your O2 sensor is picking up.)
yea i knew the pump didnt effect the the O2 sensor so all i can really do is check for vaccum leaks and what else if there is none hopefully can check in the morning/afternoon
I dont remeber what codes exactly i got 311 was one of them i think but all of them had to do with the system rich bank one. I have 142,000 miles i have had it for 3 1/2 years. The light had come on once before but this last time it came one and stayed on longer and more often.
311 is thermactor( smog pump). there is a pink vacuume line that runs from a silynoid on the right, top of the motor, around the back to the left side near the exuast manafolds. It goes to the valve that opens the line to let the are from the pump get to the cat. My pink lin got too close to the manafold, and put a hole on the back side of the line(it looked good untill I turned it over).
My pink line fadded so it looked like a dull ornge color.
1 cheeck for vacuume at black line going in to the selynoid
2 check the selynoid
3 check the pink line comming out of the selynoid
4 check the valve
5 check the smog pump, and all its hoses
The computer will monitor the O2 sensor during a self test and see if the O2 content changes when it activates secondary injection. It should know if it is working or not. The passages could be clogged up in the heads, preventing air from going through and thus setting the code.
