I own a 04 F-250 4x4, V-10 , 6spd ...I'm looking to install a detroit locker in the rear end...has anyone done this or could direct me to a forum where someone has ??? I am curious as to the installation .... pretty much kind of a step by step explanation ... I've done some searching but unable to find details ... any help would be great .... Thanks
You have to take out the old gears. I would suggest taking measurements first. The easy part is that the pinion can be left alone, so the driveshaft can stay it. Then you put the ring gear on the detroit and set it in. You measure the gear backlash, and shim as required. It sounds somewhat simple, but if you have never done gears, I would suggest either a friend that has , or paying someone. I am pretty mechanically inclined, and I still had help my first time. They aren't hard, just really tricky, and thousandths of an inch DOES matter. Good luck, Ted
Just installed a Detroit locker in my 04' F-250 4x4 ..... the job went pretty easy..it took most of the day to complete but I took my time and cleaned everything good ...when I was done my ABS light was on so today I called Jeff at jawsgear and he informed me that I needed to take the ABS control gear off of the original unit and install it on the locker ... the gear doesn't look like it comes off but he insists that it does ....I'll look at it tonight and report back ... other than that everything went smooth with no real problems ... if anyone needs any questions answered I'll do what I can .. or you can contact Jeff at jawsgear ....Marty
Have you driven it yet? What do you think? Personally, they are great, but can be a little unnerving in slippery situations when the back end kicks around. Have fun.
Ted ...... I haven't driven in wet conditions yet , but so far no problems ... nothing like what some guys report........ very quiet , you can hear it engaging and disengaging, but nothing unnerving .... I've only had it in one day , but I can tell a difference in performance ...I would give two thumbs up for anyone who is considering in installing one .... I already ordered a select lock for the front........... I'll let you know how it works out...Marty
