I am new here and have a question. We have a 1996 Ford Explorer Limited with 100k on it. Recently there has been a clicking/popping noise coming from the glovebox area.
Our AC was working great and then all of a sudden we would hear that noise again and boom the AC would turn off & it would blow heat.
What is this? How do we fix it?
Would it help to add R134? We bought a can, but are unsure where it is to be added. We can't locate the low valve.
I don't have a generation 2 Explorer, but your symptoms sound like they could be related to issues covered in the blend door fix sticky in this forum. Check it out here https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...ad.php?t=24962 and see if it helps.
I have a 96 explorer also and i have had to replace my A/C compressor twice. The noise you describe doesn't sound exactly what i heard, but it may be the same thing. When it starts blowing warm air pop the hood and see if you compressor is still moving - if it is locked up the belt will be sliding over the pulley instead of the pulley spinning.
As for the charge, i have had to do that to - the haynes manual shows you how to identify the low end. Also, buy a can with a guage built in - it makes it easier to know how much to add.
Sounds like broken blend door to me. If the AC suddenly stopped working it wouldn't be for lack of R-134 unless all the refrigerant leaked out at once in which case you're problem is bigger than just adding a can of refrigerant which would just leak out again anyway.... FYI on my 98 the low pressure port is directly above the accumulator on the passenger side of the engine and has a black plastic cap covering the schrader valve.
