Question 1996 Ford Explorer AC help

I have a 1996 Ford Explorer Limited with 100k on it. Recently, we have had the annoying problem of having to listen to a poppong/clicking noise coming from behind/below our glovebox.

Every once in a while the cold AC would suddenly start blowing heat! Then we would turn the AC off, wait a few minutes, turn it on and it would be cold again! Oh, to have that problem now! Now, it's August in Texas and our AC is blowing nothing but heat.

Wondering if we need more R134 added, we bought a can. We are not sure where it is to be added. We understand it has to be added to the low valve which is usually blue. We see a green valve & a black valve. Can anyone offer any ideas?

Thank You!

Hi and welcome to FTE. While I'm not sure what would be making the popping noise, something to check would be the blend door and blend door actuator. If it cools well unless you hear the popping noise, I'd tend to think the refrigerant charge is probably OK.

Thank you. We are going to try the "blend door quick fix" by Jeff Frank found at FTE. I'll let everyone know if it works for us! When my husband took off the actuator the air started blowing cool- something that we have not had in a while! It is not bowing as cold as it used to though, but we have not finished the "fix". He still has to drill the hole & insert the pin.

Does anyone know- is the D shaped pin located on the actuator suppossed to rotate? My husband is afraid he has broken the actuator when removing it.

Y'all are awesome! Thanks for all the help!

If you're not sure where to put the freon then DON'T ATTEMPT IT. It could be hazardous and dumping the stuff into the air is illeagal. Best to leave this to a pro if you're not completely certain you know what you're doing. It could also damage the system and cost you big bucks to repair if done wrong.
