Will they fit?

Hi there, hope I can pick a few brains out there, and would also like to say thanks to all the advice I have gotten so far!!

I have a 1991 F-150 4x4 302 and would like to know if I swap to a 351w:

1) Will mustang shorty headers fit those heads and still bolt up to the factory y-pipe?

2) Will I need to change the computer?

Also, can anybody tell me what was the best year and model of truck that had the fanciest bench seat with the fold down center console? I am looking for a drop in solution the factory plain bench.

Looking forward to your responses!

Hey Diggie,
welcome to FTE!
The Stang shorties wont bolt up to the factory Y, they dont come out at the same place as truck headers, also the 351 is a taller block, so agin, a different location issue there as well.

Is your truck MAS equippedM my truck uses a computer from a 94 5.0 Mustang, VEX 1 is the oneand my motor is a stroked 351.

Yes, you will need to change your computer

In this case would you recommend using the mustang headers and making a new y-pipe with O2 sensor or is there something out there that will bolt up? I thought that I read that on the 302, they will line up just right to allow for the factory y-pipe, or am I better off purchasing something new? the mustang headers are so cheap that I thought if I could get away with them, I would.

No the truck is speed density and the 351 is not a MAF so I wasn't worried about it, should I be changing to another computer? Will this be easier to intergrate a tuner down the road, or can I use a tuner with a speed density motor?

Yes, you will need to change your computer
Hmm, just take a mustang computer from the wreckers?

Thanks for the reply, 94F150-408, its great to be here!

Ya know, I'm not certain if you have to change your computer or not with the speed density on a 302 to 351 swap, anyone know? If you plan on doing a stroker, forced induction or major upgrades, then you could do alot more in the tuning on a MAS equipped engine, so in the long run this would be your best bet.

I use the Bassani headers and Y pipe, they're not cheap, but they do perform well for shorties. There are several good ones out there, BBK I believe makes a set, JBA's are very good, there are several others also, but those ones are good. I imagine you could make yourself a new Y pipe for some less expensive stang headers also.

You can probably get away with running the 302 computer. I know people here have done that with no problems. However, the wiring for both motors is pretty much the same, so if you got a 351 computer, it would go right in (although it needs to be for the same transmission, so if you have a stick shift, you are going to be hard pressed to find a stick shift 351 computer). I would try running it on the 302 computer first, and if you have problems, you can have a chip burned for the 302 computer or you can try to find a 351 computer. The mustang computer will require changes to the wiring harness in order for it to work.
