I have a 98 expedition 5.4 with a 130,000 miles. When i accelerate it seems to run rough like it is misfireing. It seems to be getting worse and now it seems like it is going to die out sometimes when it is idling.Sometimes when i step on the gas real hard it will misfire and the check engine light will flash about 20 times and then go off. When hooked up to a scanner no codes came up im guesing because the check engine light was not on it didnt have any codes stored.Im about ready to take it in to a shop but if anyone has any ideas on what it could be i would like to try to fix it myself.
I have had to replace a coil pack on it before because of the coolant leaking on it.But when that happened the check engine light stayed on.I have also replace the maf a few months ago because it was running rough and check engine light was on.
Without a specific code, it is nearly impossible to know why it is running poorly. Some common problems are coil packs, IAC valve, vacuum leaks, dirty MAF or TB, etc.
Every time I have went to Autozone to have them scan a CEL it has came back with a code, it is free and doesn't take very long. It you have one near by I highly recommend them for this service. Good Luck!!!!
MAF is short for Mass Air Flow (Picture of MAF mounted to Air Filter)
(In order to inject the proper amount of fuel, the computer needs to measure the quantity of air flowing into the engine. The device which does this is called a mass air flow sensor, or MAF. That's the aluminum device mounted on the air cleaner cover with a black box atop it )
TB is short for Throttle Body
A housing containing a valve to regulate the airflow through the intake manifold. The throttle-body is usually located between the air cleaner and the intake plenum. I've always thought of it as a replacement for a carburator<!-- //END DEFINITION CONTENT --><!-- bottom navigation -->
I wish I would have found this site a year ago when I spent $503 because one spark plug went bad. I could be $483 (plus interest) richer and feel a lot less foolish right now. This site is officially my truck bible.
