From what I can see here, everyone seems to be very happy with the results. However, I was wondering if you can install this predator "program" into the truck without adding the aftermarket gauges. I have a new 350 crew cab on order, and I'm not crazy about adding aftermarket "stuff" to the inside of the cab. Now the exterior (exhaust, etc.) is a different story! I guess my biggest concern is EGT's. Will the program allow the temps. to remain in the "safe" range?
Sorry for the long post, but Diesels are new to me. I have always owned "gassers." Thanks!
If you are not towing, running a programer would be just fine without gauges.
If you are towing, you BETTER have them.
As you can see, it is 5 positions, changeable on the fly. The gauges are built in to the monitor, and you have two different options for mounting. The monitor can be hard mounted for stabilty, or use an adhesive on a vertical surface, which can be removed simply by pulling it off. There is only 1 wire to run inside the cab, and it can very easily concealed.
I am running one and love it. It makes quite a bit more power than a programmer (check the dyno graphs, right at 400 rwhp and 800 lbs of torque on a 2004 strategy truck with no other modifications) and you can adjust the power levels depending on the load. If the EGT's get too hot, the unit will back the fuel down in order to keep them from exceeding whatever EGT point that you set. If you shop around you can get both the module and monitor for about 700 bucks; I picked mine up from a dealer about 40 miles away from here for 725, tax and all. You would be very hard pressed to get a programmer and a good set of gauges for the same price.
Unfortunately though, the Edge box is a fueling box and can't help with the transmission. Its not a bad system and MotorHaven will be start carrying it this week but its not a programmer either.
You're right about being hard pressed.... that's too much money. Here's what I recommend: get $700 and call MotorHaven on Monday and ask for a programmer and gauge package. With the left over money you can then take your wife out to dinner. Its like the old Circuit City commercial: you can buy a better TV... for less.
The Edge does have the switching features... we used to sell a box that did the same thing (a Bully Dog system under the covers) before the programmers came out and like all the units we ran across the complaint was the shifting. The only way around it with the newer boxes is backing off on the power right at the shift. Its too bad the new systems can't be chipped so you could get the best of both worlds.
From what I've seen running my SCMT you probably could get by without gauges because under all but the hardest driving unloaded in the Hi Perf mode the EGT rarely makes it past 1050 or so - pre turbo.
Up a good long and straight hill of a half mile or better, I would think that you could probably get the temps up in the monitor carefully range.
Towing is another story all together. I bought my gauge even before buying a tuner.

When I first got my Edge system, I loaded my SCMT over top of it (which shouldn't theoretically have even worked, but it did) and it killed the de-fueled shifts and went back to the SCMT tire-barking shift. I would have left it that way if the timing wasn't too far advanced...
If I bought a Predator, could I load the transmission program and it do the same thing? Ill get one in a heartbeat if it will work...
One other thing that you might want to do is check your tire pressure on the rear tires. If you aren't hauling anything you should be able to lower the pressure down to the 55 PSI range if you haven't already.

I ran my 03 S/C S/B in 'stock profile' with just the Predator in 65HP tune (no EGT gauge) and empty most of the time.. Some light hauling.. No problems.. But eventually went for the exhaust gauge.. Same driving conditions all along, and nothing even close to damaging EGT's.. I felt the same about adding the gauges, ONE, because I was having warranty issues, and TWO, I like a clean dash.. I did install a EGT/pod (it's in my gallery) and came up with an install the looks very clean and almost OEM looking.. Exhaust/Intake will help with the temps, but the best way to protect you 'and' your investment would be to be able to monitor the burn... Long story short...Temps are OK, even better if you add an exhaust, and if you don't load'er up, pull long steep grades in high altitudes, and/or in high outside temps.. Towing, or heavy towing would have been an EGT gauge 'must' for me.. Or, you can always return it to stock program if you have a doubt as far a load ect. without the gauge or pipe. My opinion, as well as what I've seen on my own gauge.. Hope this helps..
