I have a 91 Short van with 175k mile and the rear is starting to whine. Last saturday I drained the oil and refilled. Wjile I had the cover off I looked and everything seemed normal. I cant figure if it is coming from right or left side. I was wondering if it could be both bearings wearing the same time. It is loudest at 55 to 60 mph then quiets down or gets to high pitched to hear. Also could someone decipher the codes on the tag so I know what I have. Here is the codes.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-Jan-03 AT 11:06 AM (EST)]45 = 3.45:1 ratio
75 = Ford 7.5 inch rear differential
Noise described sound most likely like either worn pinion bearings or worn spider gears in the differential. At the 55-60mph speeds, if you let off the gas and coast, you should hear/feel a more pronounced noise and vibration. Often going to the rear of the van while someelse drives will help determine this.
Other sources of similar noise could be bad rear U-joint or a bad rear axle bearing.
