I have a 56 F100 with a Mustang rack and pinion. Does anyone know what cars or trucks I can rob a column from ? According to "ididit", I need a 30'' column. The column I'd like to find would have tilt, column shift, ignition switch, and if possible the gear selection indicator on the column. I had planned on using a new column, but a paintable column like this, with the mounting hardware, is around $700. Beleive me, I dont mind spending money on this project, I just dont want a new one that bad.
Thanks
Hi Headman,
I think that most of the guys that are upgrading their columns in F-100's are using Late 70's and early 80's Ford or Chevy van columns. The Ford columns are a little fat for my taste so I'm pulling one out of a '78 Chevy van this weekend. It's got column shift, tilt, and a column indicator but no key. The yard wants $65 for it and all I have to do is repaint it. That's not bad in my book. I'm pretty sure that the early 80's columns have the column key but are similar size and shape.
I'm positive that companies like Flaming River and Ididit make steering joints to connect any column to any rack so I don't think that part should be a concern.
Hi Headman - Svooom is right on. My 56 has a 82 GM tilt column with the key on the column. The column is a piece of cake. Its the wiring tie-in that always freaks me out. Take the time to set up the column angle locate the hole thru the floor. The GM column thru the stock hole location is too steep for my taste.
