tapping

This is in regards to my 1986 Ford Bronco 351W (carburated).

Within the last two days I've noticed a considerable amount of tapping coming from under the hood. Checked the oil today and it was three quarts low (I change my oil every 3k and I'm due in about 700mi). I havent noticed oil leaking that would contribute to three quarts. After topping off the oil, the tapping has not gone away. It sounds like its coming from both heads. The (stock) oil pressure gauge is in the middle of the 'normal' range. Any ideas on what to check next or what could possibly be the problem? Thanks.

Is it like rocks in a glass jar or a tapping on wood sound?

Does the knocking sound increase with rpm?

Does it only happen at a certain rpm(range)?

If it knocks at idle you can try this, If I remember right, what you can do, unhook one spark plug wire, turn the truck on listen, re connect plug wire, disconnect the next one, start the truck listen, repeat. Do this until the sound goes away completely or decreases substantially. If I remember right, if it goes away completely your bearings are faulty, if it decreases in sound your rods are faulty. I may have that backwards but regardless you will have isolated the cylinder and the cause, at least you would know its more likely than not a main bearing/ rod problem. Good luck
