2000 F-250 CC,SB, 4x4 PSD with 90K. A few weeks ago I was driving down a rough gravel road and heard a fairly loud rattle up front. After getting back on pavement it was gone. Now when driving under 50mph and hitting bumps in the road, I hear this annoying thud/rattle. The slower I go, the worse it seems to get. Last week I had the front shocks replaced, and told the shop to check the front for anything loose(tie-rod end, etc). The tech could find nothing wrong, so now I am confused. I know it is virtually impossible to diagnose a problem without seeing the truck, but any ideas where to check would be appreciated. Thanks guys
I noticed the rattle before I had the shocks replaced. While replacing the shocks the tech looked for anything that might be loose, but he claims he found nothing out of the ordinary. Thanks for the response.
Swaybar links, exhaust sheilds,Trackbar brackets or trackbar itself
chk to see if any of the spring isolators fell out(between the leafs and around the metal guide clamp)
It sounds like a metal on metal rattle, so I don't think it is gravel. Thanks for the ideas forty fords, I will check those items you mentioned. Thanks for the ideas guys, it is appreciated.
How about the plastic wedge ( for lack of a better term) (Spring isolators?) on the front springs? One on the front and one on the rear of each front spring. I had to replace mine at about 87k and I was getting a metal/metal sound.
I just looked at the front springs on both sides of the truck, and I do not see any plastic wedges anywhere??? The sound I would assume that would make is what I am desribing though.
The spring isolators are right where the spring bolts to the frame, between the two leaves. There is a hole in the bottom leaf that appears to be for a pin on the isolator to drop into to keep it from moving around. I think the original ones were orange - my replacement ones are white. They are covered in dirt currently and hard to see.
I just looked again, and found nothing like that. I found a "C" shaped clamp that goes around both leaf springs where they are bolted to the frame. It seems like something could be missing there, but it is the same on both sides. I guess I will have to take it in to get looked at because I can't stand the rattle anymore. Thanks for all of your help, it is appreciated.
I had the same frustation trying to diagnose a rattle in my '01. I tried everything, it sounded like it might be a heat shield, but what it turned out to be was my catalytic converter. Something broke loose inside of it and would cause a rattle when the engine was under load. Couldn't get it to make the noise any time other than when I was driving down the road. Check it out, worked for me.
