I have been recently shopping around the local junkyards in an effort to locate a decent 302 that will drop righ tinto my 1993 F-150. I found two at the local yard, but am not sure what to really look for.
One is out of a 1990 Ford Bronco. The speedo registers 87,000. Not sure if it has rolled over or not. Looking at the exhaust manfolds, they are not cracked. Is this good evidence that it is 87,000?? Oil looked good, decently clean.
Second is in a 1991 E-150 conversion van. Speedo reads 131,000 miles. Both manifolds are cracked.
The question here is what to look for at a junkyard when picking out a motor? I just want to get another year or two out of my truck. Either engine is $450 and comes with everything minus accessories.
If the engine is still in the vehicle, run a Carfax report on the VIN and try to determine the actual mileage. You should be able to tell if it has rolled over based on the history of the vehicle.
Does the junkyard offer a warranty at all? Some will at least give you another engine if the one you buy is no good. If so, I'd go with the Bronco - maybe it really has the low mileage.
other things to look at? 1. Does the engine turn over easily, or at all, by hand? 2. look at the antifreeze if you can get any out of it
