i have an 89 BII 2.9 4x4, the oil pressure indicator usually sits around the M in the word normal located on the dash panel. IT recenlty started to flucuate going all the way to the L in normal, is this normal? Where does everybody elses oil pressure indicator normally show? What could be the culprit of this? Any ideas would be helpful. ( i bought some oil cleaner they stuff you put in the crankcase could this help?) Ive read some forums fromt his site saying that some people unclog oil sludge and it ruins their oil pump and engine etc... Also my engine is a rebuilt one it only has about 18K miles on it i change the oil every 3k miles and use 10w 30.. let me know whay ya think!
Depending on what time of the day, outside temp, oil wieght, mine will run in the middle "sometimes" and on the low side of N "sometimes". In other words its all over the place. I have noticed when it is hot outside (or 4 wheeleing at slow speeds for a long time) it will drop. (or thats what the stock indicator sezs anyway)
I have bought a "real" indicator and the line to install, just have not had time to do it.
Mine too is a 89 b2XLT 4x4 2.9
The install is not too bad. Just remove the stock sending unit (bottom right of the motor as you stand in front of the truck) and install your oil line and route it into the firewall to inside the cap.
An Ice Pick is great for this task BUT USE CAUTION!! Run the line next to the rubber seal of the current wiring harnes. You will not have to drill any holes and you still have a good seal with the new line into the cab.
The only thing I know that will bother me will be the stock one sitting there not moving. Maybe I will "T" the connection and have both working at the same time
No, I mean connect an aftermarket/test oil pressure gauge to the port for the stock one, which is behind/below the power steering pump, you have to crawl under.
that sounds good but how will you know what is a good signal to the unit? I could be wrong, but I'm thinking the best is the pressure type and not the electric one.
I'm sure the information is available somewhere that will tell you the ohms or voltage = what pressure you are looking for? IE: 30psi = 120 ohms OR 30psi = 4.2 volts of signal.
I too have an '89 BII. My gauge is usually on the "O" in Normal although it does climb all the way to the "L" before the thermostat opens for the first time.
You said that it's fluctuating? It could also be the sending unit. I had replaced mine several years ago due to fluctuations in readings on the stock gauge. After that, it worked fine again.
i replaced mine and it usually runs around 20-60 psi anymore of less would get me worried. Its a mechanical gauge i picked up a trio of them at my local autoparts store for less than $40.00 it included all the hardware for the water temp. oil press. and voltage however i havent hooked up the voltemeter i think its pointless
