Cam Position Sensor's

Looking at all the threads on Cam's I asked an engineer who works at Navistar his read on the subject. (Name unpublished) he wrote me this answer on the subject: "Cam position failure usually occurs in the engines infancy, if the camshaft rubs or bumps the sensor it immediately takes it out.
It is one of two sensors in the engine that will make it die. All other sensors have default values that if they fail, the engine will keep running and the engine light will come on. The CAM sensor can be changed in a few minutes.
There is also what is called the IPR Valve which will shut down the engine if it fails but it's not something that can be easily replaced on the side of the road.
The IPR Valve is located on the top of the engine in the front of the fuel filter and screwed into the back of the high pressure pump. Not fun to get to."

I guess it wouldn't hurt to carry an extra in the glove box in case of going somewhere where you wouldn't be able to get one in case of emergency. I have heard prices from $87 to $200 for one. I am wondering how so many engines really need this change or is it something else. Have 46,000 miles on my 7.3L 2002 and no complaints at all.

Hope this helps,
fknipfer

Yes it is a good idea to carry a spare, You can buy them from international for about 80-90 bucks, buy them from the stealership for 180-200.

I carry a spare CMP senser after reading all the posts about it here on the forum. I don't know about carrying around a spare IPR valve, very few posts about that one. Just keep your oil changed out and clean, that should keep the crud out of it.

I picked up a spare cam sensor for my new(to me) truck at the local IH dealer. My work deals with heavy eqiup and we buy chassis from them so I got a discount. total was $85.54 I practiced last night in the shop with tools I have on-board so I could swap it on the road if necessary. I'm at 90k miles for what its worth. I compare it to the old 70-80's electronic ignition box. There wasn't anybody I knew that didn't have a spare one of them under the seat. At least they were only $20. my $.02

first off ...what a great site!...and an awsome group!...my warranty on my 97 PSD expired last month and now i am havin to get down and dirty...i have gone through 2 cam sensors and carry a spare in the glove box..but i dont know where it is?...i bought a POS haynes manual and no diagram or anything for that matter on the cam sensor...
i am going to mexico this winter again and was wondering if any of those relays under the hood in those boxes could go and cause a roadside breakdown...expensive and long tow up the baja!!...
any special tools i should consider?..
i have pretty much tried to think of everthing...i even have a spare ECM!...serpbelt and have replaced my water pump...
i only have just over a 100,000 miles on her and its been a good girl compared to the nightmare 6.9 i had before...
i am worried about the head gaskets with the banks stinger kit i have...have thought of putting an intercooler on her just to lower the boost a litte bit ...
also i never put any gauges on it...no trans command either...been 5 years and no problems...just dont hold down the throttle to long and back off when she shifts into 4th and OD...your feedback would be appreciated!
thanks everybody

Check out the 2 links in my signature. Click on my user name and "view public profile" to access them. One note, the International part# ending in C98 now ends in C99.
