Have a 53 f100 w/6V system. Have a 8V Bat, put new brushes in generator and AMP Meter shows charging. However, while trying to get gas guage to work, noticed that when generator was charging, voltage was a lot higher than 8V. Did some checking and adjusting on regulator and Voltage seems to be 12 to 14V while charging. Now this truck has not been driven since 1964, I doubt the generator was upgraded to 12V. I know the battery was a 6V when I got it.

Could a 6V Generator have a shorted field and put out 12V? How can I determine if this is a 6V or 12V generator?

I had a few generators that were 6 and 12 volt. Didn't know which was which so took them to the local NAPA store and they checked them for me and told me which was which,,,no charge.
