This is a little more Super Duty than most of the topics posted, but here goes. We just bought a 40' fifth wheel and so the F-250 has to go (not big enough). I'm looking at a 2000 F-650 crew cab. It has a 3126 Cat (250 hp)with a 7 speed, and 98k miles. Are there any problem areas with these trucks that I should be on the look out for? I would hope that the Cat is good for a few more miles, but what about the rest of the truck?
The only real sticking point is the manual trans for in town use....But having driven a 56' F-600 bobtail lumber truck in my much younger days, it isn't an insurmountable problem.....
hydraulic brakes, it has a compressor for the seats and rear suspension. new 22.5 tires and alcoa wheels. I haven't seen it yet, I'm waiting for pictures before I drive the hour and a half to see it in person.
sounds nice and will make a good towing vehicle. glad you realized your f 250 would be grossly overloaded. those tires will be pretty expensive if you need to replace one but with the little amount of driving you will do and the low weight should make them last a long time. just remember, no recaps on the steers.
No CDL required for anything under 26000 GVW. You might need an air brake endorsement depending on the state you live in, if the truck has them. Over 26k private use, you might get away without a CDL, depends on the mood of the cop that pulls you over......
When we went trailer shopping I told my wife we had two ways to go, 1) Get a trailer that the current truck would pull, or 2) Get the trailer that we wanted, then find a truck to pull it (legally). You can see which route we took.
But it is a nice trailer, a 40' Travel Supreme triple slide, with a 21k GVW.
I have this same truck in a 24' bobtail, the Cat 3126 is a good motor, the 7speed has been rebuilt two times in 165 k... the first at around 10 k with bad syncros in 5,6 and 7 and then again at 130 k when it seized at 65mph. Have also had the clutch master cylinder replaced 5 times,,dealer said there was a recall but no fix so they just kept replacing it,,,the last one now has 40 k on it....maybe it's a keeper. I get 8mpg loaded or empty,,,in town or highway. It's just like driving my SD but a little bit bigger, also , its the most comfortable out of all the other trucks made in this size range...good luck
