Question Clutch in 79

I need to replace the clutch in a 79 F150 4x4, 4-speed (w/granny gear). I've never replaced a clutch before. What all is involved?

Thanks.

If you don't have a 3 ton jack take it to some body that does. The 4 speed and transfer case is more then 4 man can press.

Depends...that's what you'll need if you try to down load a married tranfercase/transmission by yourself. If they are not its a little better, but the trans alone weighs about 150-200lbs, about the same for the transfercase. My old truck has a floor plate over the trans that allows you to grab the stick and hold it while someone else( Arnold Schwartzenegger) muscles it into place. Either way I'd separate the two. Then remove the bellhousing/ linkage disconnect. ...and it's right there. Easy huh?

I took my np435 with the np 203 transfer attached to it , by myself. I stuck my engine hoist thru the side window, put a chain around the trans, dropped the driveshafts and trans cross member, let the 203/435 down on the ground and rolled them out of the way. Be careful , its all heavy and tough to manhandle,

I have replaced clutches by removing the trany/transfer case, and by pulling the engine. I'd take the pull engine route any day. If you had a lift and the proper trany jack, it may be a different story. To remove the transmition and transfer case without the above tools, you will spend most of a day laying on your back removing drivelines, cross member, linkage, starter, transfer case, trany, pressure plate, flywheel and three pounds of dirt and rust from your eyes. (Did I miss anything?) It goes back in reverse order except the rust and dirt will come last and you may end up with only 2.5 lbs dirt this time. I can pull the engine in my '79 in about 2 hours. With the engine out it is easy to remove the flywheel to have it ground. Easy to install new clutch and pressure plate, and IMHO easy to align the engine with the trany when putting it all back together.

I'm shure there are those who will disagree with me here, but having done it both ways, this is my preference. While you have it all apart, use a top quality clutch so you don't have to do it again or cuss the cheap one every time you start out. I have had the best luck with OEM or Luk clutches.

I'd have to agree. I've never taken out the tranny and transfer case but I have taken out the engine and it goes pretty smoothly. It's nice to do most of the work standing.

i leave the trans and t-case together because ive had trouble with the trans pulling apart and the guts falling out so i just remove the 4 bellhousing to trans bolts slide the trans back as far as u can then remove the bellhousing for extra room then just pull ur old cluch and pressure plate id recomend just getting the kit cause it has cluch pressure plate throwout bearing and pilot bearing it should be about $150 and it comes with an alignment tool id also recomend getting your flywheel resurfaced but total time should only take you about 2 hours

Thanks

Thank you all.

I guess I need to inform my neighbor that I will be using his garage and engine hoist.
