got another surprise last night with my '93 ranger 4 x 4 . i tried the 4 wheel drive button (electronic) for the first time and it does'nt light. neither does the low range when i'm in neutral. i'm sure it's an easy fix. this is a low mileage vehicle that rarely saw 4 x 4 service. it's probably been a year since its been locked in. can anyone care to speculate what i might try to check or what common problems are with these? the haynes manual is not too much help on this one. thanks, Kent
I checked the fuse and it is fine. I am also hearing a relay click behind one of the jump seats so now i'm assuming the button and relay are working correctly. i'll bet the motor is stuck....i'll check this weekend and keep you posted. KS
from all that i've read the shift motor itself is the most likely candidate to go south, and it's been said that not using it is worse than using it alot. so whenever i think about it , like when im waiting for a train or when the wife runs into jo-ann's , i'll engage the 4wd and low range buttons, turn them on & off a few times without moving the truck (otherwise my auto hubs would lock in and i would have to back up to un-engage the hubs) ive also done this in the driveway with the truck not running, still have to have the key in "run" position. you can hear the shifting in the transfer case when you do it that way.
Thanks for the info. i'll definately check it this weekend. I'm thinking it may be the motor stuck because it's low mileage and the previous owner rarely used 4 x 4. i'll let you know, thanks. Kent
it's fixed! to recap: the light on the dash would not light. i could hear a click behind the passenger seat where the relay and box is. I took the motor off the transfer case, took it apart and greased/cleaned it. It was spotless inside. The magnetic speed sensor had to be removed too because it was wired to the motor. It was covered with oil and small particles (since it is a magnet). I cleaned it. There was a wire that was partially rubbed through...must have been hitting the driveshaft or something. I spliced it together better and now it works! i think it was because the speed sensor was all gummed up and grounded out with particles. Thanks everybody, KS
