Hey everyone, I am new to owing a diesel, and its been giving me a hard time since I got it. Its a 1996 7.3L. When I bought it, they replaced the glow plugs. fuel filter, and a sensor because it wouldnt start. Its been 2 months and sometimes when I start it, it doesnt turn over as fast as normal, then runs really rough for about 15 seconds and then dies. Usually if I shut the key off, and then turn it back on, wait for the glow plugs and start it it will start and run ok. Any suggestions to what it might be?
maybe just some weak batteries or alternater?? the glow plugs pull a lot of juice for a minute or two after the truck is started and maybe you dont have enough amperage to run everything. you should be able to get the batteries and charging system checked at almost any auto parts store. good luck. post the results and let us know what you find.
Normally when I go out to start the truck for the first time of the day, its starts great and runs great. It seems to be when the truck is still warm that it doesnt want to start. Once it does start it runs fine. I honestly dont remember what sensor they replaced, the dealer took care of it because it died the first day I got the darn thing. I have also used injector cleaner in the fuel one time to see if maybe it was something like that.
Cam position sensor is the one that usually causes no start and stalling problems. Did you get a receipt when the dealer worked on it? I hate to assume that's what they replaced. Since it starts OK when cold I don't think it's the batteries. Cold is when the most current draw is on the batteries. When it does start is there smoke or does the engine run rough?
