I have a '91 Ford Explorer that I've changed the thermostat on and now it will rise to way past the mid-mark and then drop rapidly off to the one fourth mark. It then repeats the process again and again and again, etc. It NEVER stablizes.
I used a meat thermometer in the heating/cooling ventilator and the temperature seems to go up and down with the temperature guage.
Right after I put the thermostat in the truck developed a leak in the water pump and the radiator. Could that be caused by too much pressure?
The mechanic has now replaced the thermostat again and it still does the same thing.
you are changing the wrong thing try changing the pump it may be the source of your pressure problems...my thermostat was doing the same thing...finally... it took the truck to stall alot and finally stop running altogether for me to actually figure out the real problem after changing the thermostat 3 times...

thats all the problems I have had...
Make sure the thermostat is installed with the little hole in the 12o'clock position. This can cause problems. You may want to replace the radiator cap as well. They tend to weaken and cause the same symptoms. If this doesn't work, replace the water pump......
