Has anyone here done a 3" cat back system on their '03 or '04 Expy? If so what was the cost and how was it done. The reason I ask is that my local shop is saying that it's a system that has to be ordered because of a tight spot by the rear suspension. They are quoting $500-$600 on it because it can't be fabricated in house. What do you think? Also, what performance gains did you notice, if any? thanks
Cat back systems usually don't provide any substantial gains versus just a muffler swap.
In the case of the 03+ Expy, full on cat backs are still somewhat rare. Plus, the OEM is actually fairly good stuff. It'll last the life of the truck.
I'll give you one suggestion to add a somewhat custom appearance...Paint the exposed pipe black and throw on a nice chrome tip. That's what I did. The new muffler will go on later this month if I ever get the darn thing out of the shop!
I put a Gibson catback on my 03 expy. The 03 catbacks cost a little more than the previous generation. The 03 systems bolt on to a flange and have a 12" flexible section of pipe. I don't feel any hp gains. I think I might have picked up 1mpg freeway but didn't recored enough previous install to be sure. It's louder thank stock. Drones a little at 65 but gets better at 70. Probably not worth the money.
