Any one know how to back up larger than~800mb files? When I try with the standard ms/seagate, it stops after the first disk is full and then wants me to clear some space? or put another disk in. So I put another disk in and I think it starts over again. The save is automatically compressed, but it is still too large.
Are you trying to do a full system backup or specific files? If you are only trying to back up specific files you can use WINRAR and set a maximum file size, it will then automatically create a back up set with each file the size you specified. For a full back up you may need newer/better software. Also newer versions of NERO burning rom allow to make a full system backup to cd.
Thanks Mike, yeah I'm trying to do a full backup. Actually, I do have nero and can do a backup with it, but I think that if the pc crashes and you want to reinstall, its a little tricky (i.e.,DOS). So that's why I would like ms install. What's WINRAR anyhow?
Ghost is the way to go. I use it to back up all our windows servers at work. They get backed up to tape as well, but with Ghost, you don't need to re-install the OS and all your apps after a crash. Of course, you need the space to do the backup, as Ghost won't burn CD's automatically.
Try making it smaller by skipping the *.tmp and swap files. The temp files on IE6.0 can reach 10K+ files of 2k or less, but, take up 100 MB+ because of disk/sector spacing. Skipping the temp directory in your profile can save a lot of time and space. fwiw.
I have 2 internal drives. The main is a 80 gig and the second is a 120 gig.
Now most files I have are run off the 120 and I back them up on 2 40 gig's and a 30 gig.
I've been thinking about getting another external (maybe firewire instead of usb) that is bigger than the 120 just to be save, because the 30 gig is a drive from my first desktop which I upgraded to a 40 a couple years ago. And sometimes it doesn't seem to perform the way the new ones do. (speed wise)
