I tried to open the side back door of my 97 explorer with the door locked. The handle popped and now it doesn't open the door. It stayed slightly out of position and is now useless. I tried to take the door panel off so I could see what needs replacing or resetting. I gave up before just forcing it off. This problem obviously seems to be a defect. You shouldn't be able to break the handle that easily.

Is there anything I can do myself to correct this?

Can the door panel be removed and reinstalled without damaging parts? Is there a parts kit for this, since other experiences tell me that some of the snaps alwasy seem to break?

Does Ford cover this as a defect that is repaired at no cost (even out of warranty) since it is dangerous to have a door that does not open?
The new handle was $10.45 at the local ford dealership. Once you take the 2 screws out of the door remove the little panel around the handle itself. Then slide the panel the screws went through forward and lift it off. Waddle the connector for the window switch until it comes loose. Now you can look in and see one of the snaps that holds the door panel in place. My panel slipped off of the heads of these snaps and left all but two in place in the door. I used a screw driver and a paper towel to pry without scratching the door paint. Yes, you have to pull and pry like you're going to tear it appart before it comes loose. Now for the re-install.
