A couple of months ago we discussed having larger tires installed and no need to reflash/ calibrate speedometer. Well I went from 265/75/16 to 285/75/16. Everything seem to be fine. Finally went on vacation and while driving on the interstate, with the cruise engaged, truck gets under a load going up a hill and transmission shifts really hard. It goes from 2000 rpm to 2600 rpm to 3000 rpm, kinda like it is shifting through two gears instead of one. Any suggestions? I have a 2001 sc 4x4 5.4l
From what I read, it's not that there is no need to reflash/recalibrate the
speedometer, it is that there is not a way to reflash/recalibrate the speedometer electronically. You have to change something out in
your transmission or differential, I'm not sure which.
I think it's a gear or wheel. I put bigger tires on mine and it
runs faster now than the speedometer shows.
I don't know what year it was added in...but on my 02 with the 4.6 Triton, I read in the manual that it has a "learning" transmission. You can reset the tranny by disconnecting your battery to reset the puter, then just hook it back up. Your tranny will begin to "track" your driving habits and begin to set itself to follow the way you drive. Althoug it does say it takes a few hundred miles to get into a good solid sync.
I never knew that Ford even had anything like that until I read my manual on the truck I just bought. So I did the reset and I did notice a different shifting pattern. Hopefully it wont take that long.
