I took great care in preserving the condition of my leather wrapped wheel as I have seen many that were all loose and sagged. Unfortunately, it was to no avail, a couple of days ago I noticed the top wheel rim is starting to degrade. My bumper to bumper just ran out in the middle of the month, and this is not covered by the extended warranty. Has anyone else addressed this problem, or had it covered by warranty? If so, how was the wheel fixed, were you happy with the results, etc... Additionally, it looks as though the wheel on mustangs is the same design, can anyone verify that they interchange, as I would prefer that design of wheel thickness and feel.
We have a "94" Explorer that we had the Leather Wheel replaced under warranty at about 30,000 miles and it has gone to hell again at 45,000 miles and we also took great care of the wheel. We priced a new one and it was about $170.00 (ouch)we talked to an upholstery shop and they said they would not touch it. If you find a fix or a wheel that will work(like the mustang) let me know.
I contacted a mustang part recycler and they confirmed that the wheel from late model mustangs does in fact interchange. I am currently checking around for the least expensive replacement from a mustange and expect to pay somewhere around $100 or so. The wheel on mustangs is of a superior design I believe.

I had my steering wheel replaced under warranty at about 15,000. The problem is they replace it with the same "crappy" product. Now it is out of warranty, and it looks like crap again. With mine, the steering wheel has multiple dents in the leather, like there is no padding underneath. It really looks bad. Quality is Joke 1!
Just an update, I took the truck into the dealership as soon as I noticed the wheel was no longer in good shape. The service writer submitted an appeal to Ford for warranty service and it was approved. The replacement wheel was a much better product than the original and has a thick rim without the soft padding underneath. As a result, I am now pleased with the result.
