Need Help/Recommendation - '03 5.4L

Hi from new member!

Am on the verge of replacing my '93 w/ an '03 SuperCrew 5.4L.

Have heard almost all good things about the truck and engine from both friends & Consumer Reports.

Curiously, my independent mechanic of 11 yrs. does not particulary like the 5.4L (or the 4.6L for that matter) and HE IS A "FORD GUY"!

The only specifics he gave were problems w/ keeping the newer engines timed properly and preventing oil sludge buildup (vs. my 302 or a 351).

What gives?

Are there any legitamite concerns re: the 2003 5.4L that the members of this forum are aware of?

Thanks for your help!!!

JF

Never hear of these problems as a reason to stay away from the Triton V8's
He probably just doesn't like working on these new engines, they are alot harder to work on that an older truck, mostly just because of the cramped engine bay. Some common problems are bad COP's (Coil On Plug, no more distributor), blown spark plugs, (mostly pre-99 models), and the spark plugs are hard to change. I haven't had any problems with my 02 5.4 supercab XLT. Hope that helps.

Thanks, triton_2002! Yes, the engine bay difference is night & day. Are most owner's able to run 87 octane in the 5.4L w/ good results? Forgot to ask my mechanic & friends about that.

I have a 4.2, but.....

All of these engines are designed to run on 87 octane, and sometimes if you put higher octane gas in it, it will run worse.

It should run just fine on 87!

Yea, 87 oct. is fine. You only need to run premium if you have a supercharged engine (Harley/lighting) or if you change the fuel curves with an aftermarket programmer/chip.

I would be interested to know what kind of problems he is having keeping these engines timed. The ignition timing isn't adjustable so maybe he is talking about cam timing?
And they only sludge up if you neglect to change the oil when it's supposed to be changed.

I am ran 87, 89, and 93. I could tell no difference in gas, none, at all. I run 87 in mine all the time... no problems!

Smile Thanks to all of you and...

Racerguy:

After talking briefly w/ my mechanic again today, I think triton_2002 hit the nail on the head w/ his 1st post. I think my mechanic is on the "old school" end of the continuum and just a bit too resistant to change. I'll just have to deal w/ him later. You all have restored my resolve to get the SuperCrew 5.4L!

Thanks,

JF
